A Successful Sustainability Survey
Thank you for your efforts in helping us spread the word about our 2014 State of the Industry Sustainability Survey. The survey will wrap up at the end of November and thanks to your support, we anticipate achieving our goal for manufacturer participation. The next step will be to review and analyze the collected data. We plan to share the results at our industry event on June 9, 2014. Stay tuned!

Strategic Next Steps
As one of Provision’s primary goals for 2014-15, we are initiating the development of an industry strategic plan that focuses on the transformative change required for long term sustainability and competitiveness in our sector. With a focus on how to enhance the overall economic, environmental and social performance of the food and beverage industry, the strategy will highlight the collaboration and pre-competitive changes required for success.

It will also outline how Provision can provide the leadership needed for this change. Phase 1 of this project has been initiated, which included hiring a strategic consultant and conducting an internal planning session with both Provision’s staff and the Board. Results of these sessions will be shared in the form of an industry action plan in June 2015 at Provision’s industry event (see below for more details), with the intent to seek stakeholder input. We hope you will join us!

Save The Date For Provision’s AGM & Industry Event — June 9, 2015
An industry event not to be missed, Provision’s 2015 AGM will be held at the Mississauga Convention Centre on June 9th. This full day event will feature a number of thought-provoking sustainability presentations, highlighted by must-hear keynote speaker, Andrew Winston.

Highly respected and a dynamic speaker, you’ll want to be in attendance for this one.

We will also unveil for the first time our 2014 State of the Industry Sustainability Survey results and strategic action plan for driving change within our industry. Mark your calendars!

Portal Coaching Support For Your Member Companies
Provision is now offering portal coaching and support for food and beverage manufacturers ready to integrate sustainability into their business operations and culture. Leveraging our Online Sustainability Portal, we’ll work alongside your member companies, providing support on the plant floor as we walk them through the portal’s benchmarking tools and resources designed to assess, monitor and improve a food and beverage facility’s performance.

Provision can:

  • Offer guidance on how to use the portal’s Self-Assessment results to develop a comprehensive roadmap and action plan
  • Facilitate planning discussions in the boardroom
  • Provide historic data entry for the Key Performance Indicator Scorecard to establish a baseline and reduction goals
  • Conduct employee and management surveys to foster engagement & commitment to the program, as well as solicit input and feedback
  • Identify project opportunities and the best funding programs to make it all happen

    This initiative is supported by Growing Forward 2 (GF2), a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. Eligible participants will be asked to commit in-kind time and approve a case study about their portal experience.

    Go Without The Flow - Our Latest Blog 
    Manufacturers continue to tell us that wastewater is one of their biggest ‘pain points’ in the processing facility. In our latest blog, we unpack some of the issues, examine innovative solutions and see where the Online Sustainability Portal can provide help. Give it a read and be sure to pass the link on to those member companies you feel may benefit. 

    Roll Cameras
    In collaboration with the IRIS Collective, Provision is producing a short video highlighting what sustainability means to the food and beverage manufacturing industry and examining the business value of incorporating sustainable practices. Envisioned as a “sustainability primer,” the video will become a key introductory piece on the Online Sustainability Portal as well as a vital communication tool for sharing the benefits of sustainability during presentations and portal demonstrations.

    A number of manufacturers have signed on to contribute their views and experiences. Stemmler’s Meats & Cheese and Cave Spring Cellars have already graciously opened their doors, allowing the production team to conduct interviews and shoot footage at their locations. Upcoming shoot dates include Steam Whistle Brewing and Weston Foods, with other manufacturers and retailers planned.

    Engaging Different Audiences With The Business of Sustainability
    Reaching out to the food and beverage industry on a regular basis to tout the business value of sustainability remains a top priority. Not only do we want to showcase the benefits of using the Online Sustainability Portal, it’s also important to share the success stories.  

    Cher recently presented at the Ontario Craft Brewers (Provision’s newest member) Conference alongside Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. CEO, Steve Beauchesne. This unique “tag-team” approach offered the audience a demonstration of the tools and resources within the portal, while Steve shared the specific business benefits from using them.

    Portal demonstrations were also delivered to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Board of Directors of two additional members—the Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Processors Association and Food & Beverage Ontario. There’s no question that opportunities such as these, to engage leaders in the manufacturing industry and the highest level of government, will continue to enhance our outreach efforts.

    Meanwhile, our Industry Program Manager, Meena Hassanali, presented the portal and a case study featuring Sons Bakery at the second EMC A Journey in Energy Management session on October 16th, held at Sons Bakery. Meena also showcased the portal at the third and final EMC event held at Marsan Foods on November 13th.

    Sharing highlights from Provision’s recently commissioned Food Waste Report, Meena made a well-received presentation at the Food Waste workshop in Orillia, part of the Municipal Waste Association’s annual conference held on October 29th.

    What’s Next…
    In late November, Cher and Robert Cash (Canadian Oilseed Processors Association and Provision Board Chair), will co-present at the Round Table for Sustainable Crops meeting. The duo will discuss responsible agricultural sourcing and the risks to market access from manufacturer, food service and retailer sustainability demands.

    Provision will also be heading to Niagara College on November 25th to share the business of sustainability and how to use the portal with the newest crop of brew masters.

    In March 2015, Provision will have an opportunity to demonstrate its Portal at the 2015 Food and Beverage Environmental Conference in Alabama—an excellent opportunity to expand our reach!

    More Portal Development
    Continuous improvement and enhancement are our primary focus for the Portal as we begin to plan the next phase of development work. High on our priority list is:

    • A new and improved Getting Started section that makes accessing and using the tools and resources in the portal more intuitive
    • Enhancements to the Self-Assessment Tool which will allow users to turn assessment results into an action plan
    • A Key Performance Indicator Scorecard that includes indicators for tracking social sustainability metrics
    • A streamlined navigational system that uses a drop down menu format throughout the site Tabbed views in the My Profile Dashboard to create an uncluttered interface

    Plus, we’ll be working on lots of little updates and improvements designed to keep the portal fresh, current and on the forefront. We look forward to sharing these new enhancements with you in the new year.
