Made in Canada Solution Tackling $31 Billion Food Waste Challenge

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that one third of the food produced is wasted along the value chain, and in Canada, the situation is similar. Provision Coalition’s milestone report, Addressing Food Waste in Canada indicates that 30-40 per cent of food produced in this country is lost across the farm, manufacturer, retailer and consumer continuum.

Provision Commissioned Report Recommends Industry Collaboration To Tackle Food Waste Challenge in Canada

The formation of a collaborative industry working group to develop strategies for reducing food waste would help to bring down the $27 billion in food wasted annually in Canada, recommends a recent study.Developing an Industry Led Approach to Addressing Food Waste in Canada, a study commissioned by Provision Coalition, looks to combat the 30-40 percent of food lost along the Canadian food value chain with much of it finding its way to landfill or composting.

Call for Proposals: Mapping the Food Waste Issue 
AUGUST 1, 2013 
The Network for Business Sustainability seeks a Canadian researcher to lead a project on "Mapping the Food Waste Issue." The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that one third of the food we produce is wasted along the value chain. Food waste increases business costs, stresses natural resources like water and arable land, and contributes to climate change. This project aims to identify the key elements of the food waste issue in Ontario and nationally: stakeholders, sub-issues and root causes. This research will be used to support the efforts of Provision Coalition in forming a food waste-working group that will seek to reduce food waste across the food supply chain over the next 3 to 5 years.

Provision Coalition Introduces First Elected Board and Welcomes Meena Hassanali at Inaugural AGM

Friday, June 7, 2013 was a day of firsts for Provision Coalition. The organization held its first Annual General Meeting since becoming a not-for-profit corporation, and its members voted in their first elected Board of Directors. The day also included a discussion of plans, strategies and goals for the newly incorporated organization as well as a formal welcome for Meena Hassanali, the Coalition’s new Program Manager.

The Ontario Food Industry Environmental Coalition announced today that it has changed its name to Provision Coalition. The adoption of a new name is part of a strategic evolution, which also includes the decision to incorporate as a not-for-profit, the development of a new brand, and the launch of its Online Sustainability Portal.
